Ryuichi Kawamura to sing 100 song at Budokan

Tue, November 30, 2010 (10:43am EST)
LUNA SEA member Ryuichi Kawamura (40) is aiming to outdo himself with a special solo concert at the Nippon Budokan on March 13, 2011. During the concert, which is titled "Genkai no Sono Saki e: 100 no Monogatari ~Epilogue~," he will perform a total of 100 songs over a span of more than 6 hours.

In February 2008, Kawamura held a concert called "70 no Monogatari" at the same venue, in which he performed all 70 songs from his original solo albums. This time, he will be increasing the setlist by nearly 50%.

General tickets for the concert will go on sale on February 5.

Luna Sea at the Palladium: Japanese Rock as a Movement

Post : 05-12-2010 | Greg | In : Culture, J-Rock
It’s an interesting thing to witness a nearly perfect Japanese rock performance in the context of hard rock as a global, and historical movement. I realized something last night while taking in the Luna Sea show at the Palladium in Hollywood last Saturday–it is no longer fair, nor appropriate to compare Jrock artists to vintage American & British metal, for sake of explaining it to the uninitiated. This is something different. This is its own movement, informed by classic rock and blues metal, certainly, but this has a life all its own, and with a longevity that challenges the progression of hard rock in the U.S. Last night, for those lucky to be at the show, we witnessed hard rock as an art form, in fine form.
Luna Sea the Palladium
Luna Sea performs at the Palladium in Hollywood on Dec. 4th
Luna Sea came about in the late 1980s, when American metal was at the tail end of its peak–the charts dominated by the likes of Whitesnake, Cinderella, Motley Crue, and a plethora of other hard rock acts both silly and serious. However, as Luna Sea was coming up, things on the U.S. side were already coming to an end. As the new decade began, Nirvana’s stripped-down, back-to-basics, and subversive sound obliterated the American metal movement. it wasn’t their fault–they were something so raw, provocative and fresh, so ahead and apart from their time, that they rewrote the popular music playbook overnight. In a very short amount of time, American metal came crashing down.

Whatever its faults or excesses, American and British hard rock and metal was built on a solid musical platform–with its historical roots in blues, soul, and classical music, and following a prestigious list of modern anscestors that included the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jimmy Hendrix, Queen, Sweet, T-Rex, and Aerosmith, among others. It was easy to dismiss this movement by lampooning the hair, the tights, the make-up, and the ubiquitous fantasy novel imagery–but behind the visual side a wealth of musical artistry could be heard, in the aggressive operatic movements of Metallica, the intricate finger work of Yngwie Malmsteen, or the lush, wall-of-sound engineering behind a Def Leppard album. Somewhere in the American consciousness, an appreciation for that was lost.

The British scene quickly recovered, re-inventing popular music with the Brit-Pop movement, and the likes of artists like Oasis, Blur, and Suede. Elsewhere, however, something different was happening–which brings me back to Luna Sea. It was fascinating to realize that, as hard rock and metal as a movement was dying in the U.S., a new generation of artists was emerging in Japan that’s part of a continuity that exists to this day. Sure enough, this show was part of a 20th anniversary reunion tour–and it must be recognized that Luna Sea and their contemporaries, X Japan, have gone through periods of hiatus and inactivity. What I saw last night, though, was something with a history that was also vital, and relevant. I’m hesitant to to use the term Jrock here, but in this case, I think it suffices–just as U2 or Coldplay shows that Western rock is alive and well, Luna Sea demonstrated last night that Jrock, too, is alive and well.

Luna Sea at the Palladium

Vocalist Ryuichi, Guitarists Sugizo and Inoran, Bassist J, and Shinya on drums delivered a nearly flawless performance from a technical perspective. After some necessary adjustments in the opening numbers, the band really kicked it up after an inspiring solo by Shinya (who was eventually joined by J for a fantastic display of the power of Luna Sea’s rythm section). Importantly, beyond their technical artistry, it was their enthusiam that was also on display. They’ve been at this for two decades, but there was an energy to their performance that suggested otherwise.

That U.S. fans were treated to this first-time appearance stateside was a treat for both Jrock enthusiasts, and hard rock afficianados. It may have taken twenty years, but if Japanese hard rock and metal acts are to find success and thrive in the U.S., it will be for the efforts of these artists–like Luna Sea and X Japan–willing to trade the the larger fan bases and venues in Japan for the U.S. market–for a chance and making new friends and fans throughout the world, thereby establishing a broader legacy and recognition for Japanese rock.

These shows don’t happen easily, and fans in the west should understand that tours like this are both rare, and the best opportunity to exercise their support for these artists–and for Japanese rock as a movement. Music is commodified differently now, and as CD sales have gradually dithered, the revenue from touring has taken on greater importance for all musicians worldwide.

Los Angeles was lucky to have been chosen as a stop by Luna Sea on their 2010 world tour. It may seem obvious that an act from Japan would chose LA, but that doesn’t detract from the notion that last Saturday’s show was special, and I urge everyone who regards Japanese rock as a true musical movement to attend, and support Jrock acts that come through here in the future.

LUNACY”東京ドーム無料ライヴの波紋
LUNA SEA : 2010-12-07

LUNA SEA

LUNA SEA invites 50,000 fans to their free live concert at Tokyo Dome

It’s been reported that LUNA SEA will be holding a free live concert at the Tokyo Dome on December 25th (Christmas Day).  Previously, they have announced their world tour “REBOOT -to the New Moon-” which includes concerts at Tokyo Dome on December 23rd, and 24th. However, for the concert on the 25th, they will invite 50,000 fans to the live for free, and it will be held under the name of “LUNACY” which was their name when they first formed the band.
The free live is titled as “LUNACY Kurofuku Gentei GIG~The Holy Night~“, and as the title says, there will be a dress code as limited to all-black clothes.  This “limited to all-black clothes GIG” has been held for three times during 1990 ~ 1992, and it was a synonym for LUNA SEA.
There was also an announcement that they will release an album “LUNA SEA” which they will self-cover their first indie album that was released in April 1991, on March 16th 2011.
The tickets for the free live will be available on “e+” starting on December 1st at 10:00 a.m. to December 6th at 6:00 p.m, and the result will be announced on the 15th at 10:00 a.m.

LUNA SEA re-makes ‘LUNA SEA’ & gives fans a piece of their history

When the rock band first started, they released their first self-titled album, “LUNA SEA” back in 1991. Fast forward to 2010 – the newer generations of J-rock fans, unable to get their hands on the album previously, can now grab a re-recorded version with bonuses!
The re-recorded album is slated for release March 6, 2011. Not only will fans of the old and new school get a better quality CD, but it comes in a box set. The box set will include the CD, as well as a reprint of their second demo tape, “Shade“. Released back in 1989, “Shade” included three of six original songs before being signed to Yoshiki’s label, Extasy Records. Only a 1,000 copies were made, and all were completely sold out. The box will also include some promotional goods from their indie days.
The price for this novelty box is ¥9,524 ($112.44 USD). If some of you are wondering if it’s worth the price, well… if you only knew how much that original demo tape and album costs now, you’ll feel certain in getting a really good deal.

Luna Sea in Bochum,Germany

As the winter cold started to come into full effect in the small town of Bochum; there was, however, much excitement and anticipation over a certain event that happened over the past weekend. I am of course talking about the start of LUNA SEA’s World Tour in Bochum, Germany.

It was already evident that it was going to be a special night in the town of Bochum with many European and Japanese fans occupying the town, dressed in their best JRock attires, coupled with hair colours you would only see on a rainbow.

Despite the freezing temperatures, fans nevertheless began queuing early in the day at the RuhrCongress with some individuals even camping the previous day. As the sky darkened, and as the 17:30 door time approached, more and more people started to show up at the venue for this special night. The venue staff however, couldn’t have judged the kind of reaction of the fans when the doors first opened and the atmosphere got slightly agitated with some individuals desperate to secure good seats.

Expectedly, the fans were eager to get their hands on the new official merchandise which ranged from T shirts to tote bags. A nice feature was the ‘One World Banner’ which was placed near the entrance. This allowed for fans to write messages to the band, it was particularly pleasing to see fans from all different corners of the globe showing their support and appreciation for the band.

While awaiting the start of the show, the fans were treated to a selection of music ranging from Suede to Phoenix. Furthermore, to keep the excitement levels high, the fans successfully performed numerous Mexican waves.

Around 20 minutes after the scheduled start time, the playback switched from contemporary music to an introductory piece, expectantly the place erupted in a chorus of cheers. The lights then dimmed and the fans went crazy. Time has come.

DSC_3668

LUNA SEA took the stage to a rapturous state of applause and cheering. The band opened the show with LOVELESS, much to the crowds delight. They kept up the energy by playing several favourites such as DEJAVU, SLAVE, END OF SORROW, TRUE BLUE, and FACE TO FACE. The mixture of high paced songs coupled with their slower material really added towards the overall atmosphere of the show. INORAN favourite ‘gravity’ was played next and if there was any doubt that this night wasn’t going to be special and magical, then this song dispelled all worries, history was being made tonight.

The brooding Ra-Se-N followed with the crescendo being a particular highlight and in many ways, the concert itself was building up into a legendary show.

Fans had already anticipated the following song with the technicians handing SUGIZO his violin and they were rewarded with a beautiful rendition of Providence. The appreciation of the fans was notable during this song with the crowd refraining from making noise during the quietest moments of the song, it was a nice gesture by the audience and showed the type of character that the European fans possess.

The prodigious GENESIS OF MIND soon followed which left the crowd awe-inspired and this concluded the first half of the show.

An amazing solo performance by Shinya on drums kept the crowd going while the rest of the members temporarily rested. Shinya’s colourful personality put a lot of smiles onto the faces of the Bochum crowd, and these faces were brightened up with the introduction of J. Equally as impressive, J performed a new bass solo which really got the crowd buzzing. His charismatic persona really got the crowd involved during his funky bass solo; his performance was greeted with many cheers of “J! J! J!”

DSC_4377
From this moment onwards, the band really kicked it up a gear. Hit after hit soon followed and we began with the always crowd pleasing, STORM. The tempo didn’t slow down as DESIRE followed; another song that really gets the crowd crazy and fired up. It was also evident at this point during the concert, that the band themselves started to loosen up and enjoy themselves more on stage, they genuinely seemed to be having a great time. Another classic from their debut soon followed in the form of TIME IS DEAD and the song’s use of audience participation really made this song stand out. What followed was arguably the bands most popular song, and of course I am talking about ROSIER! The song absolutely raised the roof and featured the trademark microphone throwing by J! And just when you thought the party couldn’t get any better, INORAN starts playing the opening notes of TONIGHT, suffice the say (and if you would excuse the hyperbole) the place erupted in a crazy frenzy. Pure magic.
The band then left for their well deserved break. The crowd however were in no mood to stop. With football chants, foot stamping; the message was ever clear, they wanted more!

The crowd was rewarded for their persistence and the band returned to address the audience. Sugizo, in particular was vocal and thanked the crowd for a memorable evening. His words were soon followed by an even better thank you, in the form of I for You. Over the course of the evening the crowd was treated to an array of beautiful songs and hard rocking anthems and their performance of I for You merely certified the bands adept nature of playing a wide array of music.

After the emotional song, the band reverted to the high tempo classic, PRECIOUS. The night was not going to end on a slow note! And what a fitting way it was to end the show with their usual closer, WISH. It was the final chance for the fans of Bochum to join together and celebrate this special occasion, and they did not disappoint. This marked the conclusion of the Bochum show and the end of the first show of LUNA SEA’s World Tour. The night will go down in history as one that exemplified the band’s talent and showmanship, but it also brought together friends from all corners of our world and together we joined our hearts and our minds and made musical history.

ToshI feat. YOSHIKI Dinner Concert Updates

As we reported a few weeks ago, ToshI feat. YOSHIKI will hold an exclusive Dinner Concert together with famous chef Mikuni Kiyomi in Tokyo on January 24th and 25th

More details have become known since then, among others that only 2000 guests will be accepted for the event and tickets for this highly exclusive evening will range from 45.000Yen to 100.000Yen. (That equals about 400€-900€ or 530$-1200$) Accompanied by a 30-member orchestra, they will perform songs of ToshI's "Bushi Japan" album, as well as the new "ToshI feat. YOSHIKI" songs like "Crystal Piano no kimi" and X JAPAN's ballads. For the first time, they will also do a duet with both of them playing a crystal piano.

Around the same time, they plan to release "Crystal Piano no Kimi" and "Aisuru hito yo", which was originally written by YOSHIKI for a TV movie and sung by Masafumi Akigawa.

Interview with Sugizo the Luna Sea

The day before LUNA SEA's concert in Bochum (Germany) we got the chance to interview their guitarist SUGIZO and talk about music, LUNA SEA and his future plans. Even though the band had a very tight schedule and had just arrived in Germany few hours ago, he took his time to reply to our questions wholeheartedly. We hope you'll enjoy reading!

Xplosion: This is the first time you're touring with LUNA SEA outside of Asia. How did you find out you have so many fans overseas in the first place?

SUGIZO: I already knew the Japanese music situation for the past years. The last four or five years, I played in so many countries and I really thought "Wow, so many people are waiting for us!" Music can be beyond any borders, any religion and any race. It's a beautiful thing. And yes, so I really thought LUNA SEA should play in many countries, because so many fans are waiting for us.

Xplosion: Most of LUNA SEA's fans here found out about the band through the internet and with the Re:Boot of LUNA SEA, you became more active online. Do you think the Internet helps gapping the bridge between the band and the fans?

SUGIZO: It's a beautiful thing! Of course, 10 years ago, we didn't have this possibility. We didn't have this stuff like MySpace, Facebook, all this stuff you have to keep our relationships. It's a beautiful thing. Yes, we can be beyond anything by internet, it's a very good situation. But of course, internet is also very dangerous for us and sometimes it's very risky. I think, we should know more about our responsibility for each other. Sometimes, the approach of too selfish persons is not good. Of course there are so kind persons, too. Yes, we need more responsibility. We are free. But i think, "free" is "responsibility". It's very important for the situation in the internet.

Xplosion: What do you expect the fans to be like in Europe and America? Is there anything you did to prepare yourself for your new audience?

SUGIZO: For me, all countries, races and people are the same. We are human, you know, we are one. My feeling has been like that from very long time ago. Of course, English is very important, but most important are the feelings of the music or touching the hearts. For example, very long time ago, when I played in Osaka again, their feeling was very different from the people in Tokyo. The language is the same, but the intonation is very different. So when we played there, the feeling was very fresh for us. "Oh, all people speak Kansai dialect! This is so interesting!" This feeling is very close to now.
Here, everyone can speak German and English. But in Asia, for example in Taiwan, almost all people can speak only Mandarin. Of course every country has its own culture. And every country has it's own different emotion, but we are together. This feeling is so hard to describe. Yes, we are together, but we are different. And the difference is beautiful.

Xplosion: How would you describe your music to people who don't know LUNA SEA yet?

SUGIZO: I think, our music is very original. It's very different from all other Japanese rock musicians'. we also get influenced from European and American artists, and before us, many Japanese musicians wanted to sound like European or American musicians. But of us it was different. We wanted to make our own style, our own music. Of course I really love American and European music, but we really wanted to make our own and I think, LUNA SEA's music is very original.
Every music is our bed and we wanted to plant all musical elements in it, American and European music, Hard Rock, Punk, New Wave, Jazz. We wanted to plant all of them and make new experiments. I think, LUNA SEA's music is very original, but now this style is Japanese standard music and getting very famous. I want to tell all people who LUNA SEA is.

Xplosion: So what kind of music fans would you like to reach out to overseas?

SUGIZO: I think, LUNA SEA's music has so many elements. For Punk fans, for Pop fans or Metal fans. I hope all kinds of fans get a very good feeling from our sound. I really hope so.

Xplosion: In a recent interview you said that you plan to do a bigger world tour with LUNA SEA. Are there also plans for oversea activities with LUNA SEA member's solo projects or bands like X JAPAN or Juno Reactor?

SUGIZO: I hope so, I really want to. Juno Reactor's boss called Ben told us that maybe in April, Juno Reactor might have a tour in Europe, but i'm not sure. And of course with X JAPAN and my solo projects, I really want to play here and meet all European fans, but sorry, I'm not sure of any schedules. I think I'm also too busy. Too many projects. I don't know why, but it's my natural way.

Xplosion: On this interview you also mentioned new song. Will we be able to hear any tomorrow (at the concert in Bochum)?

SUGIZO: We are just making them now. Actually, we didn't have time to finish them for Europe. I think, maybe we can play our news stuff in Tokyo, but I'm not sure.

Xplosion: Are you planing to make a new album of these new songs?

SUGIZO: We hope so! We already have so many songs. So many demo tracks, almost 15. But of course, they are just demo and we need to play more seriously. Of course we want to make our new stuff, but sorry, I'm not sure, because currently LUNA SEA's situation is too unstable.

Xplosion: May we hope for a worldwide release, too?

SUGIZO: I think so, I hope so! If fans of any country want our new stuff, of course i want! The important thing are the record companies. For example, there are very stupid things. Our old music, almost all of our music, is owned by Universal (Music). They have our music. Of course we really want to release our old stuff, but maybe American Universal doesn't want to do that now. They disagreed. This record company's program is very big. Our new record company is almost as big as Universal and yes, we really want to release worldwide.

Xplosion: LUNA SEA is often mentioned as one of the founders of Jrock and Visual Kei and you influenced a lot of younger bands. What musicians are you influenced by and look up to?

SUGIZO: First, it's a big honour for us. I really like so many young Japanese bands. Some artists are great, some artists… not so great. (laughing) But yes, I really get a big influence from them. For example, of course you know Dir en Grey, I really like their music. And you know GazettE and SID. They are getting very famous in Japan. It's a very good thing for our music scene. I think that now Japanese music is getting more power. And yes, over the time, I got a big influence from them.

Xplosion: Even though you are very busy, do you still have time to go to concerts? Which is the last one you went to?

SUGIZO: Last week I went to a Japanese Jazz Club. Usually I really like Jazz music more than Rock. So many times I went to the Japanese "Blue Note" Tokyo. Last week I saw a very, very beautiful Funk-Jazz band called "Incognito". Incognito is one of our biggest 90's Jazz acts. Yes, I saw them, so beautiful. Just rock, just Jazz-Funk-Soul-music. Usually, I really love any Jazz artists and I get a very big influence from them, too.

Xplosion: Not only LUNA SEA, but also other old bands like X JAPAN, Seikima II and Dead End from the 80's and 90's came back recently. What do you think caused that trend?

SUGIZO: Maybe Japan's music scene needs us. Because LUNA SEA, X JAPAN and of course others like Seikima II, we cal play true sound. We still have a strong power and speed. And we are 40's. I think our generation is very important for the Japanese music scene just now. Because we must play again and we should lead the Japanese young musicians. We need a guide, for the young Japanese bands. Because we should play again, we can do it now. Of course, we know so many countries' fans are waiting for us. Yes, we should play for them.
It's a very important thing for music and our culture, our relationship. We can beyond and borders, in a way more than any politician. Especially, like how, we have so many problems with relationships in China and Japan, Korea, Russia. So many problems for just the politicians. For just the nationalists. But musicians or music fans don't care about that. We don't need fighting, we don't want any problems. We just want unity once more. We need to unite more, because this opportunity is very important for the relationships of each county. I think so.

Xplosion: Was becoming a full-time musician always your dream or did you have other plans when you were younger?

SUGIZO: When I was a child I really hated music! Because I had to play violin from when I was 3. I really really hated that. When I was 8 or 9 years old, I began to like music, but at first, music sounded like torture to me. Of course, when I grew up and as a teenager, I really wanted to make music. To be a rockstar. Yes, of one point of view, my dream came true. But from an other point of view, it did not yet. I need to do more.

Xplosion:
Last question. If you weren't a musician, what else would you probably do now?

SUGIZO: Hmm, this is so difficult! Maybe…I think i really need to create something. Art, film, painting, I don't know, but I think I really need it. Any creativity. I don't know, I can not imagine. (laughing)
In my free-time, I'm drawing, but for a very long time I haven't. Of course I want to do that, painting and sculpture, I really want to do that. And I really want to cook. I can't do that, I have no skill for it. But I really want to learn how to cook. I think cooking is very creative. But I'm just music centred. (laughing)

Xplosion: Thank you very much for taking your time, even though you have such a tight schedule.

SUGIZO: Thank you, this is my very big pleasure. I really want to touch your hearts again, touch them more and I really want a stronger relationship to the European fans. It's our big pleasure. Thank you very much
